Tenerife

Introduction

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and its location, just off the coast of Africa, gives it a fabulous year round climate. The north is a tropical paradise where palm trees, banana plantations, flowers and shrubs surround you with a riot of colour. In contrast the south, under cloudless skies, is hot and dry with an almost desert landscape. Dominating the whole of Tenerife is Mount Teide, the giant volcano that, at 3,700 metres, is Spain's highest peak.

Playa de las Americas

The largest and most popular resort in Tenerife, Playa de las Americas boasts large beaches and excellent water sports facilities. There are plenty of shops, cafes and bars in which to take a break from the sun during the day. At night the centre of the resort really comes alive with numerous bars, discos and nightclubs, open till dawn! Fanabe, Adeje, Torviscas and San Eugenio are much quieter areas of the resort.

Los Cristianos

Originally a small fishing village, it is now possible to walk along the promenade into Playa de las Americas. Los Cristianos has a large, sandy beach and the pedestrianised centre has plenty of shops and restaurants. At night there are plenty of bars to choose from and Playa de las Americas is only a short ride away.

Playa de la Arena

Nestling in a picturesque location, this pretty little resort is famous for its towering, black cliffs. The beach of black volcanic sand, so typical of the island, is clean, sheltered and gently shelves into the Atlantic Ocean. The resort has a good selection of bars and restaurants but for a change of pace take the bus to Playa de las Americas just 30km along the coast.

Puerto de la Cruz

The old town of Puerto de la Cruz, centred around the small fishing port remains remarkably unspoilt. Old houses in the traditional Canarian style, charming squares and fishermen landing their catch gives Puerto de la Cruz a unique charm. The resort lies on a rocky coast with three beaches of black, volcanic sand and the seafront lido Martianez with its pools, lagoons, fountains and sun-bathing areas. The resort has numerous bars, cafes, discos, restaurants and a casino.
